When we lived at our old house in Michigan, we had Trillium growing in our back yard. I had no idea what it was, and although it was pretty, didn't really care. My neighbor at the time, a master gardener, educated me on the rarity of this delicate flower and that it was actually ILLEGAL to pick in Michigan (who's gonna know, or tell for that matter....oh and I dont think it grows back). I bet you can guess where this is going...having children and all. One day, as I was cleaning the kitchen, Libby proudly brought me a fresly picked bouquet of Trillium...all of it. And I was mad. It didn't really make any sense...It didn't have value to me until someone told me how rare it was (or had just become!). I was good about it and very appreciative of my gift (didn't do any maternal damage) but I was feeling kinda bad that I didn't take better care of it..or appreciate the gem I had gracing my garden. So here I am in Washington...eight years later..looking out into the back yard...like I do EVERYDAY...and this batch of newly bloomed white flowers catches my eye...TRILLIUM!

That's sweet. They will turn pink as they get a little older. And should someone pick them again or mow over them, never fear. It only takes 7 years for them to grow back. True story.
ReplyDelete'....or mow over them'.....that's funny!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great picture and blog. I have been thinking about it all morning. Not really about flowers but people(friends, family, relationships). Do I value them? Do they value me? Do I get mowed over? Do I pick? Thanks for sharing!!
